Calls for Hands-Free Ban A recent story reported by a growing number of news outlets is that hands-free phone use is dangerous while driving. The story is based around a study by the University of Sussex which concludes, “Imagery-inducing distraction leads to cognitive tunnelling and deteriorated driving performance”. As we would expect, this study has led to at least one pressure group calling for a ban on all mobile phone use while driving, including hands-free. Brake is a road safety charity and campaigner, so any study that supports their case for banning all mobile phone use is obviously welcomed. On their website they state, “New research from psychologists at the University of Sussex has found driving while talking on a hands-free phone can be just as distracting as talking on a hand-held mobile. Brake is now renewing its calls for the government to look again at the laws around driving and mobile phone use.” However, they do not take into account that reaction times are far
